--- Basket case (official)

Three weeks ago I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome I've been wondering how to explain this in a blog post. I've decided on the blunt approach.

Those that have ever known me will not be surprised. They will see it as the reason why I drove them to distraction at a small press comics convention, didn't feel able to commisserate them on their recent bereavement, or sat in the corner writing during pub meets. It may surprise them to learn, however, I was trying to do the right thing. But I wasn't able to figure it out, so people assumed (as people often do) the worst.

As for my feelings on the matter, my diagnosis tells me that I will never be able to do certain things 'properly' (eg. social interaction, time management, proportionate interests). I've known that for most of my life. But people haven't believed me. If needed, I can tell them about my Aspergers diagnosis, though no doubt some will dismiss this as 'something you read about on the internet'. I no longer care, much.

Isn't it always better to have a definite diagnosis though, rather just your own suspicions...?

Well, at least now the *doctors* won't dismiss it as 'something you read on the internet'.

That makes a lot of sense. In Australia Aspergers is an increasingly recognised thing (I loathe the word condition). You explain it so perfectly: the will is there, but the rules make no sense at all. An incredibly challenge.
There's a heap of literature and a heap of support (at least over here).
It's a tough call, but I really encourage you to seek out the information available.
By the way, I reckon Aspergers is not "basket case" at all: in my book it's a hell of a lot more positive than that, and indeed has nothing to do with mental illness. It's just the wiring of your brain! (easy to say, I do realise).
Hey: you're completely sane. It's just our dumb rules you don't get.

More strenth to you M.
